Sustainable Wood
Sustainability refers to the balance between resource consumption and replenishment time. Because of fast growth rages, some trees and grasses, such as bamboo, cane and maples, are more sustainable than other slower growing rees, such as oaks and redwoods. Look for products that are responsibly harvested when purchasing or remodeling a home.
Many household cleaners contain harmful chemicals. Look for products that have no ammonia, chlorine, petrochemicals, sodium laurel or laureate sulfate, and that are dye and fragrance fee. Never mix products or reuse bottles, as many chemicals can rest with each other. Buy products in bulk packaging and in packages made of post-consumer recycled plastic.

Clean water is often taken for granted – just turn on the faucet and out comes clean water. However, water supplies can easily become contaminated from air and ground pollutants. One gallon of motor oil can potentially contaminate 1 million gallons of drinking water according to the EPA. Take motor oil to a recycling center. Reduce the use of fertilizers, pesticides and household chemicals
that can end up in the water supply through runoff.
The amount of electronic waste is growing quickly. With technology changing so frequently, many electronics, like computers and cell phones, are virtually disposable. Electronics contain glass, precious metals and plastics that can be reclaimed and recycled. Check with your local government http://www.nashville.gov/pw/docs/recycle/Recycling_Service_Providers.pdf
area retail stores or log onto the EPA’s website, www.epa.gov, to find recycling programs in your area.
This record heat makes me think about how refreshing it would be to have a short, cool rain! Rain conservation is a concern for many areas and using rain is a good first step. Rain water captured in a rain barrel reduces the amount used from a municipal source, therefore also reducing your water bill. Rain barrels also catch water that would otherwise run off into creeks and storm systems. Rainwater is good for houseplants, flowers and gardens because it is free from the chemical additives in tap water.
A great resource for rain barrels in Middle Tennessee is the Cumberland River Compact
